Identity Collage:

Going into this project, I thought I had everything pretty much planned out in my head. I decided to go with a plain background by mixing different shades of blue to look like the sky, but also to show the viewers my love for those certain colors. I also added to words to describe my perspective of myself. My shirt is a bright pink almost red mix to brighten up my self portrait because I am a happy person.
About a week into the project, I quickly learned that I was going to have to try other approaches to figure out how to work on the facial features. My greatest challenge was my nose. It was difficult to make it look fitting for my face. Finding the correct shades for the face and figuring out how to blend was definitely a learning experience for me. Self portraits can change your perspective on a person by how they depict themselves in an image. Some people might see them on the same way but others could possibly be surprised. Yes, self portraits can influence how someone may view you. Some artists might prefer to create a self portrait over taking a picture with a camera because they can express themselves more by having the ability to add whatever they want. Although, a picture can be more detailed than a portrait. |
The Real Anatomy of Technology:
In the real anatomy of technology project we were asked to take a piece of technology and an organ of the human body and combine the two together in some sort of way. At first I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do but once I figured it out it was satisfying wayching the piece some together. I decided to incorporate a cell phone as my technology part and a human heart as the anatomy. I chose the heart because it is one of the main organs in the human body and without we wouldn’t last. The cell phone is a common piece of technology that everyone owns and is not shared, unlike a television for example.
This piece represents how our lives are poured into our phones. I demonstrated this in my artwork by the phone being charged by the blood of the heart. The phone correlates with the pumping and flow of the blood, because our phones are part of our life. My inspiration for this piece of art was an interview that I had to conduct with an adult that remembers life without technology. Technology has changed immensely over the years, but there are still people alive today that can remember what it was like without this luxury. I interviewed my father Jeff, who is 58 years old. He remembers when people didn’t have cell phones and didn’t have to worry about social media or the simple task of plugging it in to charge. Jeff got a cell phone in 1998, he remembers it was a small Nokia phone. My father had the advantage of growing up without the phone so if it would ever go away he would know how to live without it. Nowadays there are children in the seventh grade in school who have cell phones and they will never have a chance to learn how to do certain things without phones. There are a few luxuries that phones have these days that seem simple but could be very useful in certain situations like, GPS, flashlight, and even the camera.
Technology is a commonly used term in today's society. Technology refers to tools and machines that may be used to solve real-world problems. There is technology everywhere and most of the time we just take it for granted. I depend on my cell phone for certain things like my alarm clock in the morning. I could simply set a clock for an alarm but it is more convenient for me to have my phone set up so it automatically does it for me. Communication is so easy these days as social media has made it simple to keep in touch with one another whether it by Facebook, Snapchat, or even simply texting.

The Value of Words
For the value of words project we were asked to design a picture out of all words. The words were to mean something relating to the picture or to yourself. The concept of the UP movie was my inspiration for this piece because I had recently watched it and it is one of my favorite movies from my early childhood! The UP movie is about going after your dreams and my favorite scene is where the house is lifted up by all the balloons. I chose to capture this moment in my drawing. There is much more meaning and background in the movie that was needed for people to understand where my idea came from so I included the words. The words I used had a common theme involving the inspiration to follow your dreams and how the sky's the limit. Starting this project I practiced writing and sketching on a scratch paper to get the hang of writing with different pressures which was a challenge for me because I generally write hard naturally. Once I had the general image sketched on my paper I would write the words along the lines I made and erase the line before I wrote on it to make it more neat. I worked on the house then the balloons then finished with the sky. I left the clouds blank to add a spacious effect to make it seem like the sky. Before I turned in the finished product I went and tried to erase all the blank areas to make sure there was a good contrast.
Including words on a work of art can challenge the perception of the piece by changing the way the viewer can understand and decipher the peice because everyone can look at a piece of art and take different things away from it. Every person is touched differently by the same piece of art so by choosing to add words you could possibly limit the variety of ways a person might benefit from the art by narrowing down the meaning by words. This could happen by the limited definitions of words and the perception of the meaning from the viewer. In this piece of art, my goal was to inspire so I hope it encourages everyone to chase their dreams! Works of art don’t always need description words because they could possibly tell a story without them. A piece of art can tell a different story according to each viewer without words.

Printmaking:
For this project we were challenged by trying something we have never done before. Printmaking is the art of making images or designs by carving them out of blocks or plates. After carving out the impression, ink is applied to the block by using brayer and then you print it on another surface. Some materials that the block can be made out of wood, stone, glass, and linoleum. Printmaking can be a very tedious project that takes time and perfection. The artist has to plan every detail based on how they want it to print out before they carve it. There is no way you can undo something once you have it carved out so you might have to be flexible in case you make a mistake.
For my printmaking project, I used a piece of linoleum as my block. I then got to plan out the design I wanted to carve on it. My first idea was to with an elegant flower because I love to sketch flowers in my notebooks but once I had it carved out I wasn’t satisfied with the outcome. Then I just flipped over the piece of linoleum and started over with a new design based on winter wonderland weather that was happening outside that day. I then planned out the design in my sketchbook and ran with it! I love a nice peaceful snowfall every once in awhile because of how beautiful the snowflakes are. Each and every snowflake is different and unique in their way just like humans.
Throughout the process of carving, I chose to put a design of smaller snowflakes around my larger ones to add more of a wintry look. I learned after printing my first practice print that the carvings I made were not deep enough so I had to go back and carve away more of the lines so the ink wouldn’t roll into the creases as well. It took me awhile to figure out the correct amount of ink to use because it was challenging to get them to look similar to one another. Once we had the impression printed out we had to measure out the borders and then we had to put in on a border. My project had alternating colors between blue and white for the print and the borders. When I think of snow those are the two colors that come to my find so I chose to put my print on them. For the white prints they got a blue border then a big white border to complete it. The special number I stuck with was two for this project because of my two colors and the way my prints turned out. There are similar prints in blue then white meaning they are darker or lighter. Some of my editions had more white imperfections in them but left them in there intentionally to add more of the snowfall look and to add character.
For this project we had to make six editions meaning we had to have six prints of the same image. But once I found the right amount of ink to use and had enough carved out, I printed six final copies. All of them turned out to be just a little different, as it is very hard to get them the exact same every time. Printmaking can be a very challenging form of art, but the final results can be fascinating. My final pieces were titled snowfall because of the winter wonderland inspiration.

Art for Awareness/Art for Change:
|
For this project we were given the freedom to use any materials we desired and how we thought they fit in for our topic. The issue I decided to focus on for this project is vaping. This has been a growing issue among youth in school and their everyday lives. I wanted to show how vaping affects more than just the person doing it in my artwork. Vaping is a crisis because it can harm the developing brains of kids and could affect memory and attention. For adults how also choose to partake in vaping it can damage unborn babies. Pregnant women shouldn't use anything with nicotine. It also raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart attack. The worst consequence of steady vaping can lead to death. Vaping is such a horrible thing that people continue to do, but with knowing the risks maybe some individuals would question their decision. So my mission is to raise awareness of the issue for everyone it may concern.
Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist and collagist. Most of her work consists of black-and-white photographs, overlaid with declarative captions. She was my inspiration for this project because I felt that my message would be stated/understood best through her style. I started this project with an open mind. I knew I was going to include something with lungs and a juul. I then thought of making the lungs look like they are full of smoke. I decided to run with this idea and to use a black piece of paper with white oil pastels and white colored pencils to sketch out the lungs and juul. The words that I wanted to include on the lungs was “the real cost.” Every time you choose to allow the smoke to go in your lungs you are sacrificing your lungs to get damage in the long run. I cut the words out using a circuit with red paper to really catch people’s attention. After I had completed this I thought it was too simple and didn’t leave a big enough impression. I went back to the drawing board and decided to make more pieces related to the same topic. Another piece featured the heart, and the final piece featured the brain. “Danger alert.”was stated in the one with the brain because your brain holds knowledge of the effects that can happen from vaping. Finally “Killing me killing you”. This one demonstrates how vaping can take some peoples’ lives and will leave their loved ones with pain of them passing. All three pieces demonstrate the same theme but in different perspectives. |
